Learning Mental Practice for Sailing
Released 2008
***COMING SOON***
For Tim's doctoral dissertation, he designed a tool to help double-handed sailors learn to use imagery to mentally practice several skills. Each skill is addressed from the perspective of both the skipper and the crew. The video format is designed to assist people in learning to create a vivid and accurate image. People can continue using the video format, with eyes closed, to create the image with only verbal guidance. Once they find themselves able to easily create the image with less guidance, they can use the audio format, which utilizes succinct cue words and shortened verbal direction.
The tracks that will be available include the following:
1) Preparing Boat and Mind to Sail: Video-Imagery (Skipper)
2) Preparing Boat and Mind to Sail: Audio-Imagery (Skipper)
3) Preparing Boat and Mind to Sail: Video-Imagery (Crew)
4) Preparing Boat and Mind to Sail: Audio-Imagery (Crew)

Testimonial from one research participant:
"Tim, Thank you for the psych regatta and video work from the fall and into the spring. I was recently called to fill in as A division skipper for the second day at the Regatta due a team mate's injury during the first day. This was the first time I have skippered, besides your two regattas (fall and spring), since early-mid October. My crew Participant (the same crew I had your regattas) and I did much better than anyone expected. My finishes were 2,5,2,5,8,8. During the races my upwind speed was impressive, often 1 or 2 around the windward mark. (Downwind still needs work.) I think watching your video helped me do as well as I did. Thank again, and best of luck with your work." -Research Participant
